What is it
ChatGPT hasn’t taken long to become the talk of the town. In fact, after it was launched it only took 5 days to reach 1 million users! To put that into perspective, it took Facebook 10 months!
Put simply, ChatGPT is an incredibly smart and intuitive chatbot. A free AI resource that helps you get information and results through the function of an online conversation.
This gives it a huge number of possible uses and benefits, but there are plenty of things to be wary of.
How it works
Instead of trawling the net for information like a search engine or Wikipedia, ChatGPT essentially has a mind of its own. As a sophisticated language model, it gathers vast amounts of text from various sources on the internet, including books, articles, websites, and blogs. It then uses some very clever and technical algorithms to generate a text response that echoes human dialogue.
So, should we be using it for our digital marketing needs? Can it be trusted? And what’s the best way to take advantage of such a clever and useful tool?
Spire Digital have put together some do’s and don’ts covering best practices for using ChatGPT.
How to use ChatGPT
1. Do use it to come up with ideas
Are you struggling for ideas with content, social posts, or blog titles? Then just ask ChatGPT. For example, simply type in ‘generate some blog titles on the subject of …. ‘And it will offer you a dozen or so options for you to choose from.
It’s a great aid for coming up with ideas for various types of content, you can ask it for the latest trends or some relevant hashtags for socials, or even to find some keywords.
It can help cut down on research and thinking time, giving you more opportunity to perfect your own generated content
2. Do use it to help with language
If you have generated some content and you don’t feel it has the right tone, it’s not having the right results, or you need to tailor it to specific or multiple audiences then ChatGPT can help.
If your email or social posts needs a more sales focus, or if you need to get the word count down, then this is easily achieved.
As always, make sure you proofread and adjust the language to fit more in with your company or brand’s tone of voice.
3. Do use it as a time-saving tool
As mentioned above, using ChatGPT or AI can be a great time saving device. It can be utilised for several tasks that would otherwise take up valuable work hours. A few examples include;
a) Surveys
If you need to send a survey or questionnaire to send out to clients, customers or leads then you can ask it to generate a certain number of questions on a certain topic and the kind of results you are looking for and you’ll have your survey in no time.
b) Writing and fixing code
If you require coding solutions, employing ChatGPT for code writing can assist in generating accurate code syntax and structure, detecting errors, and providing suggestions for enhancements.
c) Recommendations
Like a normal search engine, you can ask it for recommendations on several things, including marketing tools, resources, and tips. However, you can then go one step further and ask it to elaborate or compare. For example;‘What are the advantages of using Mailchimp over other leading email marketing options’
How not to use ChatGPT
1. Don’t Depend on it
Although it may be easy and tempting to use it regularly for large pieces of content, it isn’t recommended. Eventually, Google and other search engines will detect it and will start to penalise you. Also, your brand or company’s ‘voice’ will lose its human touch. Use ChatGPT alongside other resources and your own input to create a good balance.
2. Don’t forget to check and edit
It can be easy when using ChatGPT to just simply copy and paste it into posts or web content. However, this can result in several embarrassing mistakes, the most common being the American spelling of words. It’s always worth fact-checking as well, as it may not always be accurate. Make sure you take some to check the information, and then use other sources to verify it
3. Don’t forget to check its performance
If you are using ChatGPT or other AI-generated content, then make sure you keep an eye on the stats and analytics. If it is not performing as well as the human-created content, then it may be worth reassessing how you use it. On the other hand, if you do see that it is getting better numbers don’t be too tempted to become completely reliant on it.
So, should we be using it for our digital marketing needs? If you follow these guidelines, you should be fine. However, in summary, like everything else in life, it needs to be used in moderation!
