You have built your new and probably costly website, it is live for the world to see and you are happy with how the site looks. The enquires should start rolling in now right? Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite work like that. Having an expensive new website simply isn’t enough and you need to think about how people are going to find your site.
At Spire Digital Salisbury we want to make sure that you are making the most of your website. Here are three handy tips to make sure your site can be seen in your local area and understand how users are using your site. The best part? There is nothing to pay for any of these tools and they all come from Google, the search engine that you really want your business to show on.
Google My Business Listing
Unless you run a business that services customers across the UK, being seen to customers in the Salisbury area is extremely important. You need to stand out from your competition and you want that user to visit your site and not that of a rival business.
Adding a Google my business listing is quick and pain free. You simply register for an account & fill in your contact details. Once you are happy, submit this to Google and they will send a postcard to your address to confirm your business is operating from where you say it is (there is no fooling Google) the postcard will have a verification code attached. Log back in to your account and enter the number and you will be verified.

Once you have added all of the information successfully your listing should look like this:
Google Analytics
You need to be able to see how visitors are coming to your site, and how they are engaging with it. Google Analytics is a free tool and is easy to set up. Having analytics installed on your website enables you not only see where visitors are coming from but which traffic channels are delivering conversions to your site.
If you are spending a considerable amount of money on marketing campaigns, SEO or PPC then you want to know if it is working and adding analytics to your site is the answer. You can set up as many “goals” as you like and you will be able to understand where your money is going.
Setting up analytics does require a web developer to add some code to your site but this is a small price to pay for the data you will receive.
You can get a Google Analytics account here: https://analytics.google.com
Google Search Console
Probably the least well known of these three Google tools, the search console can provide you with data that will be extremely valuable to your website and therefore your business.
The main thing you need for the Google search console is the two versions of your sitemap. Each website should come with two sitemaps. One of the sitemaps is an on-site version. This enables a human user to navigate through your site.
The second version is an XML Sitemap which is an XML document that contains the URL to all the pages on your website. It is used by search engines to ensure that all pages of the website are crawled. It is also used to indicate to search engines the importance of a page and the update frequency of a page.
This tool also helps you see if there are any crawl errors on your site, having broken links on your site effects the user experience of your website and therefore could impact on your organic rankings.
There are many more functions of the search console and if you would like more information please get in touch.
